PH Research Entry Wins 1ST Runner-up in AFCC 2023

Dr. John Christopher Agsalud Pilapil’s (Philippines) research entry “Outcomes of Patients with COVID-19 and Coronary Artery Disease and Heart Failure Findings from the Philippine Corona Study” was adjudged 2nd runner-up in the 27th ASEAN Federation of Cardiology Congress (AFCC) Young Investigator Award.

The awarding rites were one of the highlights of the Cultural Evening AFCC 2023 held from November 2-5, 2023, at the Intercontinental Hanoi Westlake in the capital city.

Pilapil received the citation from outgoing AFC President Dr. Rungroj Krittayaphong, current president of the Heart Association of Thailand while everyone cheered, particularly the Philippine delegation led by  AFC President Dr. Alex Junia, and the Philippine Heart Association Board (Drs. Ronald Cuyco, president; Rodney Jimenez, VP; Walid Amil, secretary; Aurora Gamponia, treasurer; Richard Henry Tiongco, director I and Luigi Pierre Segundo, director II);  his mentors and colleagues from the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital;   Drs. Donny Magno, Lauro Abraham, and Marion Patricio, as well as peers from the PHA Chapters.  PHA was strongly represented at the AFCC.

Pilapil said that research is his second love, adding research should always be a shared commitment and collaborative effort.  Initiated by a neurology group, this particular research work was sourced from multiple centers.

“I can’t thank my mentors enough – Drs. John Anonuevo, Jaime Aherrera, Abrahan Yobs Punzalan, and Denver Tiongson, because they are the greatest influencers in my pursuits.”

A senior Cardiology Fellow in Training at UP-PGH, Pilapil also emerged as the 53rd PHA Annual Convention YIA at the Edsa Shangri-La Hotel in May 2023.

Pilapil, a consistent ace student, who has an impressive list of research work that he authored and co-authored, will pursue adult congenital and structural heart disease.
