2023 PHA PCC Annual Convention: Cardiology for All

Outgoing 2022 PHA President Dr. Jude Ericc Cinco greets participants of UPP

DO you know that 88% of adult individual in the Philippines are physically inactive?

This is according to the latest data gathered by the Philippine Heart Association (PHA), a recognized and trusted group of heart doctors in the country which aims to reduce the ravages of heart diseases among Fillipinos and to make the Philippines a leading center of cardiology in the region.

Further, the 2022 Global Status Report on physical activity released in October 2022, found that 81 percent of adolescents and 2.75 percent of adults worldwide “currently do not meet WHO’s recommended levels of physical activity."

With the release of the first-ever global report on physical activity, the World Health Organization (WHO) cautioned that this finding has an impact not only on individuals and their families over their lifespan but also on health services and society as a whole.

52100 TURNS 10

That’s why the PHA has been steadfast on its desire to deliver quality and easily-understood heart care even to grassroots level. The organization launched the ‘Mag-Healthy Lifestyle’ in 2003 and modified it with a more apt and updated moniker ‘DO52100 DAILY’ in 2013 as one of its advocacy flagship programs.

Code 52100 stands for: 5 servings of fruits and vegetables, a limit of 2 hours screen time, not more than 2 grams of added salt; 1 hour physical exercise, 0 smoking and 0 sugar drinks.

Since 2013, the 52100 program has gone a long way. Heart doctors have relentlessly hoped to instill its value to their patients and the general public.

10 YEARS OF EXERCISES & LIFESTYLE CHANGE WITH THE SARETS

Along with the relaunch of 52100 ten years ago came the call for more mobility among the Filipinos. With the proliferation of gadgets and improvement of technology vis a vis the wide use of internet, more and more individuals find themselves seated most of the time either working or playing online. In its desire to promote mobility and exercises, PHA partnered with husband and wife celebrity fitness coaches Jim and Toni Saret to come with easy, doable, exercises.

The Sarets revolutionize 'movement for everyone' especially during the pandemic. Invariably called small pocket workout, installment exercises,  one-to-5 minute workout, or breaktime exercise, the Sarets have customized different programs depending on the participants needs or medical conditions. And all these can be done anytime, anywhere even on limited spaces or right there in your working chair!

The Fit Heart Minute (FhM) program is a one-minute workout composed of  four basic moves; squats, jumping jacks, push-ups and lunges. This set can be extended to 4 or five minutes while even sitting on the chair.

Meanwhile, the ‘Bawas Kilo, Bawat ‘Metro’ is workout routine that presents simple steps anyone can follow over a period of 15 minutes (that need not be done in one go, as long as within the day) to achieve a total of 1,400 steps or the equivalent of walking one kilometer. USAPANG PUSO SA PUSO (UPP) GOES LIVE AFTER 3 YEARS!

Coach Toni was guest panelists during the PHA's live UPP during the convention. She said encouraging mobility nowadays is challenging with all the mixed stresses we face everyday and the extreme use of gadgets for work as well as for entertainment.

"But we must go on," she said.

Building a robust national ICT infrastructure

The opportunities from digital innovations were accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic as limitations on mobility prompted citizens to accelerate migration to digital spaces. In the Philippines, these changes are evident in the growth of digital payment systems, online meeting platforms, electronic health services, online retail, direct delivery services, and many others. However, with increasing connectivity comes increasing cyber threats. That’s why efficient solutions and infrastructure are essential in combating cyber threats and ensuring business survival. Individually, Filipinos are susceptible to data breaches and privacy violations online. On a societal level, cyberattacks by state or non-state actors on critical infrastructure can undermine national security and impact economic activity. While cyber threats originate online, their consequences can manifest beyond the digital space into our physical lives. These kinds of attacks also have direct economic costs. In fact, f
