We Need a Hero

I’ve never been a fan of boxing or any contact sports for that matter. But watching Manny Pacquaio fights with ease -- sometimes almost blemish-free as if he just had a jab practice or gym workout—made me appreciate the sports.
And like many fans who thought Pacquio to be “god or demi-god” inside the ring, I pity him seeing him lying face down on the canvas in his last fight with his fiercest rival, the Mexican fighter Juan Manuel Marquez. “Ma, is he still alive? my then nine-year old daughter asked in between sobs. She too was bothered by the hero’s fall. Voted 'fighter of the decade' for the 2000s and formerly world champion at 8 different weight divisions,Pacquiao is considered by many as the best fighter/boxer ever. Only Pacquiao has done this feat ever ---world champion at 8 different weight divisions! And I feel so lucky to have watched the latest Pacquiao fights that showed his greatness: against Marquez (fight 2 and 3), against boxing’s Golden Boy Oscar dela Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto, Joshua Clottey, Shane Mosley and Antonio Margarito. And like the rest of his millions fans worldwide, I was devastated by his defeat from Timothy Bradley and moreso from Marquez.
Thank you to Petron Philippines for sponsoring the pay-per-view fight exclusively for media practitioners like me. Thank you to Ms. Mika David, ADBM RESOURCES Publicity & Special Events head, for having included me( and my family!) for the invites since 2008! In fact, my daughter Angel and her darling Belle, has been Pacquiao fight chums since then.
Aside from bonding moments for the media –writers, editors, photogs and cameramen, radio commentators, etc. Pacquaio fights also serve as bonding moments for many families, including mine. We were one in praying for the win, cheering for good punches and sharing the Pacman’s victory and the country’s pride and glory for the boxing hero.
With ‘Yolanda’ (international code name Haiyan) devastating Eastern Visayas, now is the time that the nation is in dire need for a hero. Everybody is praying hard and expects Pacquaio to go for the win. Afterall, every Pacman fight and win gives immense hope and pride to every Filipino.
I will be watching the fight on Sunday, courtesy of Petron and Ms. David at the Gateway Cinema together with Angel and my husband. See you all, media friends and let’s cheer for Pacquiao and the Philippines!

Building a robust national ICT infrastructure

The opportunities from digital innovations were accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic as limitations on mobility prompted citizens to accelerate migration to digital spaces. In the Philippines, these changes are evident in the growth of digital payment systems, online meeting platforms, electronic health services, online retail, direct delivery services, and many others. However, with increasing connectivity comes increasing cyber threats. That’s why efficient solutions and infrastructure are essential in combating cyber threats and ensuring business survival. Individually, Filipinos are susceptible to data breaches and privacy violations online. On a societal level, cyberattacks by state or non-state actors on critical infrastructure can undermine national security and impact economic activity. While cyber threats originate online, their consequences can manifest beyond the digital space into our physical lives. These kinds of attacks also have direct economic costs. In fact, f
