QCinema reinforces QC’s prestigious designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Film

The QCinema International Film Festival continues to stand as a vital cultural pillar for both Quezon City and the broader cinema industry. For Quezon City, the festival proudly reinforces the city’s prestigious designation as one of only two cities in Southeast Asia recognized as a UNESCO Creative City of Film, serving as a powerful platform that champions local storytelling and positions the metropolis as a thriving regional hub for cinematic arts. Within the broader film industry, QCinema acts as a crucial launchpad for bold, innovative works—exemplified by homegrown projects like the ₱1.5-million QCinema Project Market grant-winner Ella Arcangel: Ballad of Tooth and Claw—while bridging Southeast Asian cinema with the global stage by showcasing exceptional international co-productions and masterworks.

For its 14th edition running from November 13 to 22, 2026, across major Metro Manila cinemas, the festival embraces the curatorial concept “Genre’teurs.” This theme stands for the dynamic and daring intersection of genre filmmaking and auteur cinema. Rather than treating genre tropes and artistic authorship as separate entities, Genre’teurs celebrates films that masterfully blend popular storytelling conventions—such as animation, supernatural folklore, and social thriller—with distinct, visionary directorial voices. This is vividly reflected in the festival's bookend selections: the opening world premiere of Mervin Malonzo’s socially charged animated feature Ella Arcangel: Ballad of Tooth and Claw, and the closing screening of Japanese master Hirokazu Kore-eda’s acclaimed Venice Film Festival player, Look Back.

The Face of 2026 QCinema

This year, actor Elijah Canlas has been chosen to be the face of the event, after being a regular festival fixture and participant over the past decade.

“Actually, it started out last year pa. The festival people mentioned last year pa na I should be the face of QCinema this year. Fortunately, nakahanap kami ng libre na araw na makapag-shoot kami ng teaser and do promo materials so I could become the face of QCinema. So really I’m honored and it’s crazy - - that at first it felt like a joke, but it’s real. It’s an honor and may narating yung ka-adikan ko sa panunuod ng movies,” he said during the QCinema media launch held last October 22 in Quezon City

A regular fixture in the festival, either as part of a movie or part of the audience, Elijah is  proud to be called a QCinema baby.

“I think one of the first short films I made was for QCinema, Contestant No.4 with direk Kaj Palanca. And since then I've been here every year. I  love this festival.

“As a fan of films in general, as a fan of cinema, I think they have one of the best programming in all of Asia. It’s just fun to be surrounded by fellow cinema fans and watch the films that we anticipate na hindi pa napapalabas dito sa bansang ‘to. Dito lang sa QCinema siya pinapalabas kaya it’s always fun,” he said.

Judging by its robust multi-venue footprint, prestigious international collaborations, and deeply anticipated lineup, QCinema is undeniably a festival that is highly appreciated and eagerly watched for. From its competitive sections like Asian Next Wave—which highlights groundbreaking emerging voices—to its high-profile opening and closing films drawing stars and cinephiles alike, QCinema has cemented its reputation as a must-attend cinematic event. It commands fierce loyalty and high expectations from audiences, critics, and filmmakers alike, who look to the festival year after year as a premier showcase for the absolute best in contemporary Asian and international cinema.

Anchoring QCinema 2026’s Genre’teurs are its competition sections, showcasing emerging Asian filmmakers, bold directorial debuts and second features, LGBTQIA+ stories, and innovative short films from the Philippines and Southeast Asia. The festival’s main competition, Asian Next Wave, showcases some of the most exciting new voices in Asian cinema.

The 14th QCinema International Film Festival will run from November 13 to 22, 2026, with screenings at Gateway Cineplex 18, Robinsons Movieworld Galleria, Ayala Malls Cinemas TriNoma, Fisher Box Office, and SM Cinema – SM City Fairview. All festival screenings are priced at a discounted ticket rate of ₱200 each.
