I have been covering World Heart Day (WHD) celebration for years. The 2024 edition is special as our group of media friends joined the wellness programs and fun activities!

WHD 2024 (Manila celebration) on September 29 at Tiendesitas Ortigas started off early at 5:30 am with “Walk, Run, Bike” challenge for some 300 young cardiologists from the Philippine Heart Association (PHA) National Capital Region clusters/different PHA-accredited Cardiology training institutions as frontliners.

The rationale behind it is simple. Physicians or medical practitioners should practice what they preach: Do 1 hour of physical activity daily. PHA’s PUSONG PINOY highlights the message of “galaw-galaw,” or to keep on moving, which means spending 150 minute-exercise per week. It also advocates for obesity and nutrition control, which urge the public to start making healthy food choices.

Regular (brisk) walking, jogging or biking melts/lets excess fats evaporate from your skin. They are the cheapest forms of recreation and/or exercise. Biking works three ways. It is a means of accessible transportation, a fun recreation, and a beneficial exercise that is good for the heart.

Every day is World Heart Day with “Una, Puso”

After the challenge, the heart doctors gave free consultations and prescriptions to participants who availed of the FREE risk factor screenings: Blood Pressure check, Lipid and Blood Sugar tests, ECG, nutrition, BMI assessment and dietary check. Other programs include Healthy and Easy Cooking Demo, Hands-only/Automated External Defibrillator training and the Zumba number with young people and kid participants.

In between, the good doctors lectured on various topics for heart care and wellness such as PUSONG PINOY, high blood pressure and stroke, Arrhythmia, and cardiac arrest.

It's time to make every day a World Heart Day, as PHA President Dr. Rodney Jimenez said, "Una, Puso!" In his lecture, he emphasized the importance of taking care of one's heart, stating, "If you want to live long with your loved ones, travel, or achieve your dreams, prioritize your heart."

PHA officials and experts also shared valuable information on maintaining a healthy diet, managing stress, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Likewise, they expressed their commitment to continuing their efforts to promote heart health and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) with many more activities and programs for the public in the days to come. These electricians of the heart fully know that  CVD is still the No. 1 cause of death in the Philippines and globally.

PHA is the lead organization of the yearly World Heart Day celebration which at least 250 international heart organizations simultaneously observe every last Sunday of September.

The event was supported by various organizations and institutions, including the Department of Health and the Pasig City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

PHA has been marking WHD with a partner city since 2002.
