Angeline: From bugs bunny to a beautiful swan

Cute, little bugs bunny!

Buck teeth may look cute on young kids. But as they grow older and into the teenage years when their teeth become crowded and misaligned, the once cute Bugs Bunnies automatically become eyesores – and a case of concern among parents. More so, when they develop facial abnormalities and bad oral habits.

Angeline’s upper teeth started flaring up due to overcrowding. Then her misaligned lower gum due to overstaying baby teeth had caused bad shape to her seemingly undeveloped chin.

When we had the courage to have the (2) baby teeth extracted, she already had a lopsided face (or tabingi ang mukha in the vernacular). Worst, her lower gum has resembled the V shape. When Dr. Gamaliel Urbi saw her for the first time at his Green Dental Apple Clinic in Trinoma Mall, Quezon City, he readily offered to have her teeth corrected “on charity” as part of his personal advocacy of helping kids attain their full potential – by ‘giving’ them the best facial feature through good oral health.

First, he assessed Angeline’s case through x-ray and dental impression. He asked his resident pedia-dentist, Dr. Jem Cino, to extract 2 decaying teeth with Angeline on sedation. Because Angeline has rheumatic heart disease (RHD), we sought the approval of her pediatrician doctor who fortunately found her fit for the procedure.

But Dr. Jem decided not to go on the sedation process. After A dental prophylaxis and fluoridation, she extracted the teeth one after another with one week’s interval. Angeline did well. But her case of misaligned gums couldn’t fit any of the trainer available in the clinic. So she was subjected to other treatments such as putting brackets to some of her lower teeth and tying them up with  elastic (rubber band) ties to corresponding upper teeth. After almost a year and when Angeline’s lower dental arch has widen a bit, she was now ready for her first myobrace.

Would you believe that her first myobrace was the size of a baby trainer? After another year, much improvement have been seen in Angeline’s gums and overall facial structure and she was ready for her second trainer. Her upper teeth have improved dramatically while her lower dental arch has widen tremendously! It doesn't resemble the V shape anymore. However, her lower teeth have big spaces between them and needed further treatment so that Dr. Urbi decided to put her on dental brackets treatment.

So we have been seeing Dr. Urbi for three years now and Angeline’s bracket treatment is on its 5th month. Believe me, she has grown to be a beautiful young lady with her sweet smile even with her brackets still on. The treatment -- myofunctional therapy and brackets on her lower teeth -- may take another year but the long wait  will surely be worth it. Kudos to Dr. Urbi for not giving up on the dental case of Angeline. She is the living proof of Dr. Urbi’s advocacy and the never say die spirit of a doctor, a true professional and discipline triathlete, a loving husband and father, and a man of God.

Building a robust national ICT infrastructure

The opportunities from digital innovations were accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic as limitations on mobility prompted citizens to accelerate migration to digital spaces. In the Philippines, these changes are evident in the growth of digital payment systems, online meeting platforms, electronic health services, online retail, direct delivery services, and many others. However, with increasing connectivity comes increasing cyber threats. That’s why efficient solutions and infrastructure are essential in combating cyber threats and ensuring business survival. Individually, Filipinos are susceptible to data breaches and privacy violations online. On a societal level, cyberattacks by state or non-state actors on critical infrastructure can undermine national security and impact economic activity. While cyber threats originate online, their consequences can manifest beyond the digital space into our physical lives. These kinds of attacks also have direct economic costs. In fact, f
