89 years of progress and counting: Iloilo City shows vibrant display of heritage, flavor, and civic pride

Mayor Raisa Treñas-Chu warmly received the visiting Global Fusion Media for its own initiative the Iloilo Food Circuit and Heritage Tour 2.0 from August 25-30, which coincided with the 89th Charter Day celebration of Iloilo City.

From a thriving business process outsourcing (BPO) hub and a bustling port city to a recognized UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, Iloilo City's robust economy is matched by its commitment to preserving its architectural soul and sustainability.

The city beamed a vibrant display of unity, culture, and civic pride as it marked the 89th Iloilo Charter Day Celebration recently. On August 25, the milestone commemorated the city’s formal inauguration as a chartered municipality in 1937—a pivotal moment born from the historic merger of the old towns of Iloilo, La Paz, Arevalo, and the port district of Jaro.

Centered around the theme "Celebrating 89 Years of Progress Toward a Better Iloilo City for All," the citywide festivities spanned iconic venues including the Iloilo City Hall, Iloilo Freedom Grandstand, and Festive Walk Iloilo, drawing Ilonggos together to honor their roots while looking boldly toward the future.

The Charter Day month-long celebration featured an array of community programs, public service caravans, and stunning cultural showcases. A pinnacle of the August 25 commemoration was the prestigious awarding of the Top 10 Outstanding Ilonggos, honoring local heroes and trailblazers who embody the resilient and compassionate Hiligaynon spirit.

This year’s celebration was much more than a historical remembrance; it served as a powerful testament to Iloilo’s remarkable contemporary resurgence. Economically and structurally, Iloilo has transformed into one of the Philippines’ most progressive and livable urban centers. Driven by the local governance's RISE-to-Action agenda, the city has become a shining model of sustainable development, heritage restoration, and smart, pedestrian-friendly urban planning.

Manila-based Global Fusion Media visited the city to cover the festivities in conjunction with its own initiative, the Iloilo Food Circuit and Heritage Tour 2.0 from August 25-30, 2026. This  initiative commenced in 2024 during the city’s multi-sectoral campaign by the Iloilo Festivals Foundation, Inc. (IFFI)  "Visit Iloilo" to promote the province and city as a premier tourist and cultural destination.

“Timely man kay may ara kita sang Kape Ta Sa Merkado until August 28 at the Iloilo Central Public Market, celebrating our local coffee and the market’s long-standing coffee culture.

Salamat for helping us share Iloilo’s stories, local flavors, heritage, and progress with a wider audience,” Mayor Raisa Treñas-Chu said during the courtesy call with the group.

Our group of like-minded media friends who share the passion for authentic storytelling, came to Iloilo at the time the city was also hosting the 2026 Luzon Island Cluster Conference from August 24 to 27. Held at the famed Iloilo Convention Center (ICON), it was led by League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) National President Mayor Faustino "Inno" Dy V of Echague, Isabela.

The Mayors league meeting made it a double busy week for Iloilo yet everything was calm and orderly in the City of Love. Our group managed to walk freely on several occasions at Iloilo Business Park in Mandurriao where the ICON is located. And despite intermittent rains, traffic was manageable all throughout the city so much so that we were able to squeeze in a day tour of the nearby Guimaras!

The Kape Ta Sa Merkado at the newly revitalized Iloilo Central Public Market added a flavorful touch to the anniversary. Celebrating Iloilo’s rich coffee culture, the initiative highlights how the city seamlessly blends its storied past with modern marketplace vitality.

Indeed, the 89th Charter Day was a joyful reflection of Iloilo’s journey—a harmonious celebration of heritage, exceptional local flavors, and a dynamic economy paving the way for a prosperous tomorrow for all Ilonggos.
